Airbrushing a wolf fursuit head by zyxwen Airbrushing a wolf fursuit head by zyxwen
Crash course in airbrushing:

Buy airbrush pistol, color and just start airbrushing. Sometimes the results are way better than you imagine!

I'm pretty happy, that I "risked" to airbrush this wolf head even without having done any airbrushing before. The color just adds to much realism to it!

would you suggest airbrushing a whole quadsuit?

You definitely could airbrush a complete quadsuit. I did airbrush my complete bodysuit that goes along the mask displayed here. If I recomment it? Well, depends on your style / fur markings / taste.

I bought blank glass eyes which had a round impression where the pupils is. So I just mixed some black acrylic color with water and dripped it into the impression. Once tried I painted the rest of the eye.

This looks like fun (and a lot of hard work)!

I've decided to make a fursuit sometime in the future, got any useful advices?

I love your masks by the way :)

My only advice is to get started - otherwise it won't get finished. And yeah, take your time - making such a fursuit is a long (lerning/work) process.

Thanks! Luckily, I'm a very patient person and I have some experience with crafting and handmade art, so this should be interesting!

I expect to get started sometime next year (I need space, equipment and materials) :)

What type of airbrush did you use?

The airbrush pistol is a pretty cheap one, its just important that it got a big muzzle (0,5 mm) or it will take forever to airbrush a whole head.

The color I use is from Createx. Its called Createx Classic Transparent.

I don't think that you will get a fursuit for 100 dollars. Alone the materials for that single mask is around 250 dollars.

Well, I just bought the cheapest airbrush pistol with a 0.3 needle from amazon. You can't really draw thin details on fur, so no need to buy one of those expensive pistols.

thanks :) lol sorry i have a couple more questions, where do you get the fur you use, and did you have to paint it a certain way so the fur doesn't stick together?

The fur I'm using is from Mendels in San Francisco, they got a web shop at mendels.com. The fur is called "fox - white".

Once you air brushed the fur you have to brush it thoroughly (I use a dog brush for it). As long as you just brush to top layer of the fur, you are fine. I overdid it on the back fur of my bodysuit and now the fur isen't that soft anymore.

I used thin aluminum expanded metal which is available in every hardware store. I just glued the fur onto it and then bend it to get the nice 3D shape.

To date, the colors are still the same and I got the mask at my window looking out into the street - so its exposed to sun light. Well, most of my neighbors were a little bit upset to see a "big dog" in my window...

I got the paint at a local shop. Its called Createx Transparent Airbrush Color. The ship assistant recommended it for faux fur, so I bought it took it home and tried it out. Dunno if you can was fur which is air brushed with that color.

I did the base for this head by myself using the usual approach with plaster bandages, silicone and resin. Took quite some time, but as a result the mask fits me perfectly.

i am curious to ask but when you airbrush it is it still as soft as it was before it was airbrushed?

:iconzyxwen:

Yes, the fur still stays soft, though you have to brush the fur while air brushing to prevent it from sticking together.

I bought glass blanks for the eyes and hand painted them using a sponge and acrylic paint. It took some tries to get them right.

Question what paints are you using and how did you get them so dark?
Reply
:iconzyxwen:

Thanks a lot.

The paint I'm using is called "Transparent Createx Airbrush Colors". I just bought them here at a local store in Germany, though they are made in the USA. Basically I just used the colors black and light brown. To get some areas darker, I just painted over them multiple times using a comb to prevent the fur from sticking to each other in between.

This looks super amazing, the airbrushing surly makes it look more complete! May I suggest adding more black around they eyes since the eyelid looks very faint in the second picture, which will intentionally make the blue pop out more.
